Captain Phillips, starred webflis by Tom Hanks and directed by Paul Greengrass (Director of Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum), is an intense and emotional film which shows yearning for freedom, acts of heroism and deluge from selfish ambitions. This film is intelligently crafted in terms of story line and was performed very well by actors like Tom Hanks and the antagonist, Barkhad Abdi. The story was based from the April 2009 incident at the Indian Ocean wherein a cargo ship named "Maersk Alabama" was hijacked by armed pirates from Somalia and having the captain held hostage inside a lifeboat. webflis The movie also has a little pinch of comedy in between scenes of suspense. To make the story short let me go through the ending of the movie. webflis (Spoiler alert) Captain webflis Phillips webflis was saved but he was crying in the end. It is an interpretation for us to explore the meaning of it. Did the captain cried because he was finally saved after that long arduous wavy ride on a life boat surrounded by armed pirates? Or is it because of the reality that there are people around, specially the young pirates, who will do everything just to achieve their selfish ambitions? There are two points in the story. The first point is about the pirates. They live in Somalia. The situation of the pirates in the movie shows poverty, desperation and it seems like money is their only answer for everything. They were enticed by millions of dollars that they would get if they had successfully hijacked the ship. Because of their current situation webflis and status, the pirates express their immature intent of gaining money instantly through violent ways. At the climax of the movie, webflis the situation got tighten up that the navy seals cannot tolerate the actions of the pirates displaying to the captain. In the end, the three young pirates were executed through synchronized actions of the navy by shooting them down with a sniper rifle.
The second webflis point. Before webflis the execution, the young pirates blindfolded the captain and have intentions of killing him. Captain Phillips was begging, almost shouting, to these pirates to stop and surrender. The captain even explained that the navy cannot tolerate their actions. But the pirates didn't listen. Finally, they were executed and Captain Phillips was saved. After the execution, blood splattered inside the lifeboat. Captain Phillips managed to remove the blindfold then he cried on what saw. He cried not because of the fact that he is safe or saved. He cried because of the young pirates who died because of their selfish ambitions. In today's life, everything webflis is so fast. We always want the services that we received to be fast, efficient and instant. Sometimes we have goals in life which is difficult to achieve, that we even tend to shortcut or bypass things just to achieve these personal goals easily. We are sometimes enticed by the temptations of this world and cling in order to achieve pleasure. But the truth is, sin itself cannot satisfy. The worldly things in this world cannot satisfy enough. You may want a new phone, the latest gadget, lots of money, webflis yes you can have it but in the end it will not satisfy you enough. These things are only temporary and it can devalue itself webflis through webflis time. You may have the latest gadget now. But months after, the gadget that you bought is already outdone by the newer ones. You may have millions of money but once you have it, you're desire to fill your bank account never stops. Imagine why poverty exists? It's because webflis of the selfishness that we have. These selfish ambitions that we have hold us back in giving for others. Don't satisfy yourself with the temporary things in this world. But satisfy yourself to the things in which money can't buy. You can buy a new phone but you can't buy happiness. You can buy a new house but you can't buy a home or family. See the point? The captain sees a great future for these young pirates ahead. Everyone has a future. If they only surrender, yes they may be convicted, but people has the ability to change through time. When does maturity starts? It starts when we think for the welfare of others. The captain had done everything just to save his crew and even surrendered his life to the pirates just to save them. What drives the captain to do such heroic acts? The answer is love. Captain Phillips is such a great movie. It garnered webflis a score of 94% in Rotten Tomatoes and the critics praised the film for its stunning performance and plot. In line also with Gravity by Alfonso Cuaron, I think these films will be nominated for the best picture award in the Oscars. Hope you've learned something in this post.
