The kone joint project of Star Cinema and Viva Films that is The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin kone is out in more than a hundred theaters nationwide. Being the jologs that I am, not expecting too much from the movie, I went to watch this Vice Ganda starrer.
Praybeyt Benjamin is the type of movie that makes you doubt if the two hundred bucks you handed on the counter was worth the two hours you spent watching. It wasn’t that good but it wasn’t that bad.
First of all, I am NOT a professional movie critic. Hindi ako diyos ng kahusayan at wala akong mata ng isang eksperto pagdating sa pelikula. From what was offered in the movie trailer, mukha siyang corny, the typical Filipino comedy that relies on physical comedy and recycled stills and jokes. Kahit mukha siyang corny, ginusto ko ring panoorin kasi may kababawan naman akong tao. Haha.
So nung first day ng showing noong October 26, inaya ko ang aking matalik na kaibigan upang idamay sa panonood ko ng pelikulang ito. Yes, nanood kami noong first day sa first time of showing nito. Excited much? No. We just have to go somewhere else after. So yun, we went to the theater minutes early to catch some movie teasers and trailers. kone Then the movie started.
Ito ang storya (malamang alam niyo na rin dahil sa trailers ng Star Cinema na inilalahad na ang buong kwento sa trailer pa lang). kone Ang angkan ni Benjamin Santos (Vice Ganda) ay prominenteng pamilya ng mga sundalo magmula pa noong panahon ni Lapu-Lapu kone hanggang sa kasalakuyang henerasyon. Ang kanyang itay na si Jimmy Santos ay lumihis sa inaasahang landas at piniling maging scientist, so itinakwil siya ng kanyang amang isang general na ginampanan naman ni Eddie Garcia. Lumipas ang mga taon at imbis na magbinata si Benjamin ay nagdalaga ito. Tanggap naman siya ng kanyang pamilya maliban sa kanyang kone lolo at iba pang mga kamag-anak. Isang araw, dinukot ng mga rebelde ang mga heneral kabilang ang lolo ni Benjamin at nagdeklara ang mga rebelde ng something na mas malala pa sa Martial Law. Ang gobyerno ay nagdeklara ng Civil War so yung mga lalake sa pamilya ang dapat makisali kone sa giyera. In this case, si Benjamin lang ang pwede at para patunayan niya ang kanyang kakayahan kone kahit bakla siya. Pumasok siya sa kampo at doon ay nakilala ang iba pang mga karakter ng istorya, kabilang ang commander at love interest na si Brando (Derek Ramsey) I won’t give out any plot spoilers na so. Then so on and so forth na lang.
1. Vice Ganda – Of course, Vice Ganda is still Vice Ganda. The same person we love to watch in Showtime. There is really no distinct difference between his character in the movie than what he is in real life. Bakla pa rin siya. But the vibe he brings on screen is really delightful and he really is fun to watch for he mastered the facial expressions of comedy, but lacks in the area of drama. Some scenes in the movie felt like he is just Vice Ganda, not Benjamin Santos. While in some scenes, (mostly the dramatic ones), his line delivery is somehow unnatural and it felt like he didn’t establish the connection between him and the viewers. But still, he is the movie. He is Vice Ganda.
2. The other cast – The movie is helmed by box-office director Wenn Deramas, based from his previous works, it seems like that his formula for making a movie always involves DJ Durano. (Alam kong alam niyo ‘yan!) Sa acting ng ibang cast, okay naman. Jimmy Santos is still the Jimmy Santos we loved back in the old movies. Nikki Valdez is just convincing as a female soldier. Kean Cipriano can be really in the art of acting. DJ Durano got more lines but still flat. Vandolph, unremarkable. Derek Ramsey is the same as what he used to do in his previous starrers. His acting is just the same and offers nothing new except his usage of gay lingo. But then again, he got the viewers screaming for him. Haha. How I wish the little girl had more moments. Ang funny ng bata na ‘yon.
3. The script – The script is nothing spectacular. The jokes are the usual that gives one a casual laugh. kone The funniest parts of the movie are the parts which actually look like they’re not part of the script. Hindi ako napahalakhak ng todo todo sa movie na ito, I guess the laugh meter for this is significantly below Kimmy Dora and Zombadings. Pero yung mga matatanda sa likod namin eh tuwang tuwa naman so I think bentang benta rin depende sa nanonood. Siyempre hindi mawawala ang mga pambabara ni Vice Ganda like we’ve seen in his previous film. There are awkward moments in the movie na mapapaisip ka kung tatawa ka ba o hindi. 4. The story – One word, typical. Siguro dahil mainstream movie ito kaya talagang kulang sa creativity unlike the previous comedy films I watched kone (Septic Tank and Zombadings) . Predictable siya so hindi ka mapapaisip kung anong mangyayari, hihintayin mo na lang mangyari. Overall naman, okay ang istorya pero siyempre hindi rel
